Happily found your blog a minute ago through TNGG while doing a random bit of research on the PR industry.

Quick response: my experience was virtually identical to yours in terms of transitioning across networks over the years. I think you just described what almost everyone our age went through online...

Now the 'facebook app' thing kinda brought back a bit of that 'annoyance factor' that was the hallmark of the myspace world... and I can't count the number of group invites I get each week on FB...

As I reflect on the path of the industry I'm excited about where things are going... I'm still getting used to the whole Twitter thing, but of all the social tools we've seen, I thinks its the most unique in terms of challenging the notion of what social can mean globally and politically.

So from here... Where do you think everything is going?

Hi Rachel- thanks for your comment. I definitely agree that the AP Stylebook makes it easier to stay consistent. I can see why some places would prefer to style things their own way, though. Following the grammar rules all the time can make writing boring and stuffy, especially if you're working on something more on the creative side.

Your comment is the perfect example of "breaking the rules" in a good way. Starting a sentence with a conjunction is taught to be incorrect, but it makes sense in many situations and is becoming more common and acceptable. And I'm glad because I like to do it myself sometimes. :)

Great post. I have a love-hate relationship with AP Style too. It's nice to have a specified style for the sake of consistency. But it can be tedious and ridiculous sometimes ("Internet" is a great example.")

Right now I am working at an integrated marketing communications firm. We do PR, marketing and advertising.

And they aren't strict with AP. A lot of clients have their own "style." And for marketing pieces, you write however conveys the message best. This includes sentence fragments and AP rule breakers.

In my college PR classes, following the AP Stylebook was always trumpeted as a golden rule. If you're writing materials that you intend to send out to the press (press releases, feature stories, etc), journalists are more likely to appreciate writing that follows AP style because they'll have less stylistic revising to do if they choose to use your piece.

Also, the AP Stylebook has many great entries, and it makes it simple to stay consistent in your writing. You should really check it out. I think you'd find it useful, regardless of the size of businesses you're working with.

Wow, interesting observations. I personally don't use any style books for doing PR - but I work with small businesses, so maybe it's different. I kind of learned as I went, so it's clear that I need to do some more digging into the proper ways :).

Thanks for your comment and the advice, Ryan. My boyfriend is also finishing up college here in Southwest Florida. He's planning on attending graduate school next fall, so it's definitely a possibility that we'll have to live apart for some time.

If I find a great opportunity, relocating and taking it is something I'll have to do for myself. He knows he's in the picture for the long term, so he's understanding. Still, it won't be the ideal situation, so I know what you're dealing with.

We all go through these sorts of things. Buffalo, NY isn't exactly the mecca of all things PR/Soccer/Sports related but you have to put yourself out there and see what happens.

Like you said, you gained experience from flying cross country for an interview and hopefully that helps in the future.

Now, the problem that I am having is I am getting married in October. I wouldn't change that for the world, but now wherever I go, whatever I do in the job world, I have another person to take into consideration, especially as she finishes up her PhD she cannot leave.

That means 1) I find a job in Buffalo 2) I find a job that I can work from Buffalo 3) I move myself and the dog to some other city and we live apart for two years.

Just be open to whatever comes your way, and don't stop looking!

I agree with the two lovely ladies above. The job market is awful at the minute.
Im looking for a new job in the same field and because I have only a years experience, I dont fit into the "experienced" category or the "newbie" category.
Keep looking. Somebodys gonna have to give us a break soon!

I have always had grad school in the back of my mind because it seems like a "natural progression" after college. However, while in school I noticed that many grad programs (specifically in communications) prefer that applicants have some prior experience in the real world. While in some fields jumping into your next degree is essential, PR really can only be learned hands-on.
